How Early Should you Start Trimming Foals?

Here at Success with Horses, within the first month, we start trimming to keep the foot in balance and joints growing in a healthy way. Too often young horse’s hoof care is ignored, until they are started under saddle, around the age of two.

The terrible truth is that our rush to ride young horses creates lifelong lameness issues.

We discourage this practice, because of the fact that the coffin bone of the hoof is still growing in width till the age of 6-8 yrs in some breeds. All the joints above the hoof are growing and developing as well. Hoof balance/function is key to avoid early lameness issues. In the wild young foals/horses travel great distances everyday in search of food and water. The terrain they are living on determines how well the hoof is naturally worn.

The foal in this example is my beautiful Morab filly, Foxxy. She grew up on big hills, and rocky terrain, turned out 24/7, no matter what the weather… Super fit and sassy!
